Prostate procedure

TURP

Transurethral resection of the prostate relieves obstruction by removing prostate tissue through the urethra.

Why it may be recommended

TURP may be recommended for significant urinary obstruction from benign prostate enlargement, especially when symptoms, retention, infection or bladder effects are not adequately managed otherwise.

Before

Preparing for the procedure

  • Complete pre-operative and anaesthetic assessment
  • Discuss blood-thinning medication
  • Treat urinary infection where present
  • Understand catheter and hospital-stay expectations
During

What generally happens

A resectoscope is passed through the urethra. Obstructing prostate tissue is removed without an external incision, and a catheter is usually placed temporarily.

After

Recovery & follow-up

  • Bladder irrigation or a catheter may be needed initially
  • Urinary frequency and burning can take time to settle
  • Avoid heavy exertion for the advised period
  • Discuss ejaculation, fertility and sexual side effects before surgery
  • Seek help for heavy bleeding, fever or inability to urinate

Questions worth asking

Be informed before you decide.

  1. 01Why is TURP suitable for me?
  2. 02How long will the catheter remain?
  3. 03How might ejaculation be affected?
  4. 04When can I resume work and exercise?
