Prostate cancer treatment

Prostate brachytherapy

Internal radiotherapy that places a radiation source in or close to the prostate for selected prostate cancers.

Why it may be recommended

Brachytherapy delivers radiation directly to the prostate while limiting exposure to surrounding tissue. Suitability depends on cancer features, prostate size, urinary function and overall treatment goals.

Before

Preparing for the procedure

  • Complete staging and suitability assessment
  • Review urinary symptoms and prostate measurements
  • Discuss radiation precautions and fertility
  • Coordinate anaesthetic and oncology planning
During

What generally happens

Radiation is delivered within the prostate using the planned technique. The exact method may involve permanent low-dose seeds or a temporary high-dose source, depending on the treatment plan.

After

Recovery & follow-up

  • Urinary frequency, urgency or weaker flow may occur
  • Follow radiation-safety instructions where applicable
  • Report inability to urinate, fever or severe symptoms
  • Attend PSA and clinical follow-up
