Urinary drainage

JJ stent insertion & removal

Temporary internal drainage between the kidney and bladder when a ureter is blocked, swollen or healing.

Why it may be recommended

A JJ stent helps urine drain from the kidney to the bladder. It may be used around stone treatment, obstruction or infection and must be removed or exchanged according to the plan.

During

What generally happens

The soft tube is usually positioned endoscopically with one curl in the kidney and one in the bladder. Removal is commonly performed with a short cystoscopic procedure or by another planned method.

After

Recovery & follow-up

  • Frequency, urgency, flank discomfort or blood in urine can occur
  • Keep the removal date visible and attend it
  • Use symptom medication if prescribed
  • Seek urgent care for fever, severe worsening pain or feeling unwell
